Restoration
The thumb dimple

This type of repair becomes necessary when a dimple created by thumb nail shows excessive depth. This can lead to a weakening of the shaft at this juncture and may eventually allow the shaft to bend.

This repair requires temporary  removal of the winding the expose the entire affected area, which is then  cleaned chemically and filled with near invisible space age plastic. Then the  shaft is reformed to a new state before the winding and thumb grip are once again installed.

Once repaired and all fittings are installed, the filling becomes invisible. It has no affect on the bow's balance and its durability can be counted in decades.

The most destructive repair of the dimple is where shops will remove a large chunk of wood and glue in a new piece. This type of repair is very damaging and if that is recommended, walk away from that shop and find a professional bow maker.
This   bow was seriously devalued by this work.
